Between all partners involved, it covers the complete development cycle of automated and connected vehicle functionalities: from concept finding and design to integration and final validation. Authorization to test on public roads

Since 2015, a legal framework allows for public road testing of highly automated vehicles in Catalonia (L3, L4, L5). This single point of contact has been established to conveniently guide you through all steps of the authorization process. This service includes obtaining a license plate, support on required documentation and management of technical inspections and performance tests needed in the authorization process.

CAV testing on equipped public highway

Autopistas Abertis has equipped a 20km section of public highway with the latest technologies in terms of communication (ITS-G5), sensing, traffic management 2.0 and data analytics. The test site is located in the Mediterranean Corridor (TEN-T Network) between Barcelona and the French Border. The specific highway segment is over 20km of four-lane carriageway and includes four intersections and a 180m tunnel. This service provides the opportunity to demonstrate any project related to CAV in a real traffic scenario supported by the latest technologies and the support of an experienced partner.

Benchmarking

Objective and subjective benchmarking can be performed, in which a number of automated vehicles (or its functionalities) are compared on a set of predefined criteria. The results of this activity can be used to determine the strengths and weaknesses of a new product, or to specify the requirements and targets that it should meet in order to guarantee market success.
Applus IDIADA provides support in defining benchmark criteria, preparing and executing benchmark tests, and analysis and reporting of benchmark results including final recommendations.

Specification

Based on the results of market studies, benchmark activities, client input and a broad experience, Applus IDIADA provides support in defining specifications for new products in the field of automated or connected vehicles. These specifications can include the definition of (technical) requirements, performance parameters, targets, system limits or the operational design domain (ODD). Specifications can be defined for vehicles and components on both hardware- and software level. The results of this service guide the design and development of a new product.

Development

Applus IDIADA provides support in design and development of automated and connected vehicle functionalities, in all stages of the V-cycle development process. For example in algorithm development for ADAS systems (up to SEA level L2) and highly automated driving functions (SAE levels L3, L4 and L5). Development activities include definition of system architecture, sensor fusion, object tracking, control logics and design of V2X applications. Overall system safety and correct and fail-safe operation is guaranteed by adhering to functional safety standards such as ISO 26262.
Applied development tools include software-in-the-loop (SIL) and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) systems, the IDAPT prototype development module, a VI-grade driving simulator, machine- and deep learning methodologies, and commercial software like PreScan by TASS International and SCANeR Studio by Oktal.

Testing

Applus IDIADA provides general testing services both on public roads and controlled environments such as proving grounds and laboratories. These services include activities like logistics, instrumentation, test planning and preparation, route selection, driving and sample- and data management. Tests volumes can range from one single vehicle to a multi-brand fleet. Professional drivers can be provided, thanks to an automated vehicle driver training program. This program can also train drivers provided by clients.
Applied test equipment includes D-GPS positioning systems, V2X communication devices, driving robots, target vehicles, target pedestrians, target carriers and data acquisition units. Vehicles can be equipped with high-end reference sensors (such as lidar or radar), which’ readings are stored for post-test analysis or application in virtual simulations. This is especially useful when testing on public roads.
HD maps are available for all proving grounds, allowing for fully autonomous driving and application in virtual simulation. On request, HD maps can also be provided for any section of the Catalan public roads.

Integration

ADAS (Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems)

Ficosa develops, manufactures, and markets Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems with the main will of improving the safety of the vehicle, as well as, the driving experience of each one of the users, offering them multiple advantages.
 
In this way, the company provides Intelligent Camera Systems for the automotive industry such as Parking Cameras; the pioneering Camera Monitoring System or CMS, which is made up of cameras and displays that replace the traditional external side mirrors; Surround View System with small low power use cameras; and the Intelligent Rear-View Monitoring System or IRMS.
