The Connected and Automated Driving Forum of Catalonia
Catalonia is one of the main vehicle manufacturing regions in Europe. With a population of 7 million, Catalonia produces 500.000 cars and 35.000 motorcycles a year, counts with 2 car OEM’s and around 600 TIER suppliers, including top engineering and design centres.
Two of the main automobile and mobility pillars are self-driving vehicles and connectivity. For this reason, the Government of Catalonia and the automotive cluster CIAC encouraged the creation of the Connected and Automated Driving Forum of Catalonia in 2015, with the goal to define and deploy strategic initiatives that foster related technologies, talent and business attraction.
This forum groups the main agents committed with the development of the industry of connected and automated vehicle in Catalonia. The main agents of this forum are presented hereafter.
Government of Catalonia
The Generalitat (Government of Catalonia) is the institutional system around which Catalonia’s self-government is politically organised. Different departments participate in the initiative in a coordinated manner: business, traffic, road infrastructure and telecommunications.
The cluster of the automotive industry of Catalonia comprises more than 200 companies involved in R&D activities. Its main objective is to strengthen the competitiveness of the automotive industry as a driving force in the Catalan economy.
Barcelona City Council
The mobility and infrastructures area of the Barcelona municipality ensures the promotion of sustainable and active mobility that favours environmental quality, safety and innovation.
As a member of the Volkswagen Group, SEAT has its headquarters in Catalonia (Spain) and employs 14.000 professionals. The company also has a technical centre that brings together more than 900 engineers.
NISSAN Motor Ibérica
NISSAN, the multinational automobile manufacturer, employs nearly 5.000 people directly in Spain. Barcelona’s plant is one of the most innovative and talented ones of the company outside Japan.
Applus+ IDIADA is a leading company specializing in providing design, engineering, testing and homologation services to the automotive industry worldwide.
Ficosa is an automotive top-TIER global supplier devoted to the research, development, manufacturing and marketing of advanced technology vision, safety, connectivity, and efficiency systems for the motor and mobility sectors.

Saba is a benchmark industrial operator in the development of solutions in the field of urban mobility, specializing in car park management. The group operates in five countries in Europe and Latin America.
The Cooperative Automotive Research Network, initiated by SEAT, Volkswagen Group Research and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), is an open hub for industrial and academic partners focusing on innovation and solutions that close the gap between academic research and industrial innovation in urban mobility.

Servei Català de Trànsit( Catalan Traffic Service) is the competent autonomous organism attached to the Home Office of the Generalitat (Catalan Government) that is in charge of Traffic Management, Road Safety and promotion of sustainable and safe mobility in the Catalan territory.
