Applus+ IDIADA to build a new test area for connected and automated vehicle development

Applus+ IDIADA is starting the construction of its new test track for Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAV) between February and March 2019.

These tracks will complement the facilities that IDIADA already has, and will allow the simulation of any type of scenario related to the testing of CAV systems, vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure connectivity, as well as advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) development. The new facility will allow more adaptation possibilities in the tests, enabling the use of a variety of test equipment in the best conditions for these types of test, taking into account greater flexibility, safety and high standards of confidentiality.

The complex includes two working areas and the accesses to the test area, the first area is orientated to the testing of autonomous vehicles and their systems, and the second one is aimed at performing tests which simulate situations at intersections in urban and interurban areas. The entire asphalt surface amounts to more than 5 ha.

This new test complex has been designed taking into account the possibility of allowing up to 10 development teams and their vehicles to work in parallel in the different areas assigned to the ADAS system tests such as vehicle-to-vehicle emergency braking systems (AEB), pedestrian detection systems (AEB VRU), lane departure warning systems (LDW), lane keeping assistants (LKA), automatic braking systems for animal crossing (ELK), roadside detection systems, blind spot detection systems (BSD), automatic lane change assistance (LCA) and all the requirements of the next Euro NCAP 2020 protocol.

This new infrastructure has the flexibility to be used to simulate future traffic scenarios such as high-speed intersections and highway simulations. The test area will have the entire communication network necessary to test the vehicle’s connectivity (802.11p, 2G, 3G) including its own 4G, and especially 5G, networks which will be available throughout the test area.

The construction project was consolidated at the end of 2018, allocating an investment of 4M EUR. The construction of this new track is expected to start during February and March 2019, with completion of the works and start-up of the new test track planned between September and October 2019.
